Artist Biography
- From the International young Art 2002
Born in South Korea, Jieh earned her BFA and MFA in Fine Art from Hong-Ik University, Seoul. Jieh has participated in numerous group shows, including The Rising Sun at the Jinheung Art Center, 15/Point of View at the Baksang Gallery and The Art of Incantation at Sungkok Museum, all in Seoul, and held her second solo show That a Man Loves a Woman at the Dukwon Gallery in 2000.
Her colorful and warm work is littered with personal memories and intimate embraces. Her works depict young men and women sharing private moments in their domestic environment, from a couple locked in a passionate embrace to one simply relaxing on a bed enjoying the same book. Each and every shred moment or experience is important enough to be recorded. The couples depicted are so absorbed in the moment that they are oblivious to the viewer staring voyeuristically into their private realm. Yet, the artist is careful no to reveal the identity of her subject. Their faces are often hidden from view, not drawn in or given uniform human traits. In this way, Kim transcends the intimate into the universal. In her work, geometrical and colorful patterns dominate the backdrop or the setting of her lovers. Quilts, pillowcases, sheets, wallpapers and the clothes of her figures are all lovingly decorated.
